HUUFE: Delivering the Ultimate Online Horse Community

“Huufe is the first social media platform that is built solely for equestrians. It combines ride tracking with picture and video sharing, stable management, classifieds, riding groups and cutting-edge accident detection and notification,” explains Charlie Trietline, CEO of Huufe, a new web and mobile app scheduled for a global launch this spring. “Our goal is to provide an online community for the equestrian world and wrap in a one stop experience with a host of features for the rider.”

A Background that Serves the Sport
Armed with a powerhouse team of developers, his co-founder Richard Phillips; a marketing assistant and three non-executive directors including, Will Connell, Director of Sport Programs for the US Equestrian Federation; Richard Waygood, Performance Director for the British Eventing Team; and Ben Wood, Director of Agencies at Facebook EMEA, Trietline has positioned Huufe to serve an equestrian market hungry to connect in a way that hasn’t been done before.

“The Huufe app is pulled from the best bits of my life, based on my equestrian and technology backgrounds.”

Trietline was in the saddle at a very young age, rode as an amateur jockey, and spent 10 years in The Household Cavalry. This was followed by 10 years with technology giant Hewlett Packard. This background led Trietline to the creation of Huufe. “I thought the time was right to create an equestrian app. I saw that the running and cycling communities were well served with great apps, that tracked their activities and supported their communities. In contrast, the equestrian world was completely underserved.

“When we look at the future of equestrian technology, I think the Huufe app definitely has something special to offer.”

We are starting to see the influence of technology in the equine world.  From heart-rate monitoring girths, smart halters to temperature monitoring blankets. “You saw this 10 years ago in the running and cycling worlds, wearables are now fully-integrated into these sports, via smartphone apps,” Trietline pointed out. Huufe’s development will see it create a device agnostic platform that collects and presents the data created by these new equestrian wearables to riders and owners in a feature rich mobile and web app.

Full of Features
“For the launch, the aim is to have a really great app full of free functionality and add a layer on top of that with premium features,” said Trietline.  All of the core functions will be free. If you sign up for premium you will also have access to cutting edge safety features such as SafeRide – sophisticated accident detection functionality that sends an alarm or text message with your exact location if you were to have a fall, and LiveRide – a tool that enables users to nominate who can view you riding in real-time – ideal for younger and first-time riders. “What we are launching in May in Beta contains a lot of very exciting functionality and is only the start of the Huufe journey.”

“Most importantly, Huufe is for the community of equestrians who dictate where we go in terms of its development; we’ve made that a guiding principle.”

Free features will include equestrian activity tracking, the classified ad marketplace where you can create and view ads (You’ll even be able to sell your horse using Huufe!), social media integration, ability to create groups and events (ideal for local riding club, etc.), follow horses and riders, to name a few.

Ride tracking will be one of the unique features on Huufe.

“We are creating a platform where everything for managing and riding your horse is all in one place.”

For the premium user, creating horse profiles and granting admin and rider permissions and utilizing the stable management functionality, will be features that will be an early focus for continued development. There is the safety functionality (SafeRide and LiveRide) and the advanced group functionality, which will link into the Service Directory (riding instructors, farriers, and vets, etc.) in the Marketplace section of the platform.

“I think the equestrian world is just starting to see the benefits of technology as an enabler; the opportunity is now to create something new and fresh to bring to this world.”

Look for Huufe launching the app via social media and online this spring. Huufe will be available on iPhone and Android.
