EQUIRIDE: The Ride Sharing App of Horse Transport
College friends and alumni of the University of Kentucky, Stephen Lyster and Chris Woodside, came up with the idea for EQUIRIDE based on their frustrations of not being able to find an easier and more affordable way to ship horses. “We wanted to develop a solution that addressed our pain points when it comes to transporting horses,” said Lyster over the phone from his stable. “If you think about it, as a human, we are more eager about putting ourselves in a strangers car, than we do our horses.” EQUIRIDE is the ride sharing app of the horse world thanks to Lyster’s and Woodside’s innovative technology.
Launched in January 2017, the product is currently available in the US and is predominately used in the populous horse states where racetracks are located. “We’ve hauled all types of horses, from thoroughbreds to Standardbreds to Shetland ponies,” said horse trainer and co-founder, Stephen Lyster. The most frequent transports are with racetracks, sales, auctions, and breeding barns. “We constantly get feedback from our users that they love the convenience and the service the app offers,” he added.
The free app to download for owners, trainers and drivers allows users to schedule a solo trip or pool with others who are traveling to the same destination. “The most popular feature is the one way option,” said Lyster, “because it gives people the flexibility and a cost-effective option,” he cited. Similar to other ride sharing apps you can rate your favorite drivers. “Obviously safety is our number one goal and we constantly review our drivers to make sure they are the most qualified,” he stressed. Working with owner operator commercial transporters, EQUIRIDE does leverage some larger commercial shippers as well. “This solution connects trainers to drivers and helps keep the cost down to make it more affordable for the industry,” he explained.
Tech that Tracks
Another first of its kind feature for equestrians is the app includes live tracking. “You can follow where your horse is all throughout its journey, and we are looking to add permissions so you can choose who else can monitor your horse.” The website and app are 100% proprietary software, pointed out Woodside, who is the tech brains behind EQUIRIDE. “We designed the product to handle the complexity of horse ownership from a payment standpoint,” he said. It streamlines the process so it pays for a ride based on the equity stake of a horse.
Get the 911
One of the most important features on EQUIRIDE and one Lyster and Woodside hope you don’t need to use is the emergency feature. If you are in need of assistance you hit the button on the app and it will send out alerts to all the drivers nearby – and continue to seek out a driver until someone responds.
On the Roadmap
“We are looking to introduce a new feature called ‘Stable Moves’ later this month,” said Woodside. It will only be available through the website. This will allow users to schedule 10 or more horses to be shipped at one time. “We are constantly looking for new ways to improve the experience and we welcome feedback from our users to deliver based on their needs,” he highlighted.
EQUIRIDE is a cloud-based solution that uses the AWS platform for data encryption.
You can download the free app in the App Store or on Google Play.
